76-789 Rhetorical Grammar

Units:9.0
Department:English
Cross-listed:76-389

Students in the MAPW program are required to take an intensive course in the grammar of Standard Written English. The purpose of this course is to lay a firm foundation for the correct use of English in institutional settings, and to equip students for work in a professional writing environment where they may be required to adjudicate questions of correct written usage. In Rhetorical Grammar we examine and practice not merely the grammatical structures of written English, but also the kinds of textual environments that motivate this structure. For example, you will not merely learn to identify phrases like at six oclock as examples of Adverbial Phrases, but will go further and study the rhetorical consequences of placing such phrases at the start of a sentence (At six oclock a bell was rung) versus at the end of a sentence (A bell was rung at six oclock). In this way, you will investigate and practice the significant grammatical constructions of written English such as Cleft Sentence, Passive, and Relative Clause from the point of view of their functions in discourse. In focusing on the internal structures of sentences and their functions, this course complements the sister course in Style, the study and practice of longer textual units. Students do regular written assignments. Grading is through two major examinations (mid-term and final), and two tests midway. Enrollment is limited to students enrolled in the MAPW program. Very occasionally students from outside the program are admitted to this course, but strictly with the permission of the instructor. Texts: Paul J. Hopper, A Short Course in Grammar, W. W. Norton, supplemented by materials posted on the Blackboard web site.
