Spring 2008: Methods for the study of change in language, including the comparative method, internal reconstruction, and typological reconstruction. Problems in distant linguistic relationships and the propagation of languages; language contact, language birth, language death. Prerequisite: an elementary knowledge of phonetics or phonology, such as a course in which a certain amount of phonetic transcription was practiced.
