42-201 Professional Issues in Biomedical Engineering Units: 3.0 Department: Biomedical Engineering Prerequisites: 42-101 Related URLs: http://www.cmu.edu/bme This course helps students learn to understand technical and professional challenges biomedical engineers face. First, it introduces students to applications of technology in medicine and biology. Second, it provides an overview of professional topics involving bioethics, regulatory issues, communication skills, team work, and contemporary issues. Outside speakers describe real world problems and professional issues in biotechnology and bioengineering, and progress toward their solution. Students have the opportunity to visit state-of-the-art laboratories in such areas as bioimaging, musculoskeletal biomechanics, rapid prototyping and manufacturing, and cardiac assist devices.
