From 10% to couples per county: The statistics of the gay & lesbian population The heated debate in the media about issues such as same-sex marriage and anti-gay discrimination leads to larger underlying questions: What does it mean to be gay? Is it a matter of genes or choice? How can we count members of this sub-population with any reliability? How can we study this population scientifically? What are the economic and societal consequences of changing policies on this matter? The answer to most of these questions is based on the statistical analysis of the data collected. In this course we will ask all these questions and more; we will learn some of the statistical and probabilistic tools required to sample from populations, estimate unknown quantities, quantify the uncertainty around the estimates and decide between competing scientific hypotheses; and finally we will apply them to think critically about these issues, evaluate information presented in the media, and distinguish facts from myths, stereotypes, or propaganda. No statistical knowledge is required.
