17-791 Software Engineering Seminar Units: 3.0 Department: Software Engineering Related URLs: http://www-2.cs.cmu.edu/~wls/sssg/ The Software Research Seminar (SSSG) meets weekly to discuss research in progress and review recent literature in software engineering research. The purpose, beyond exposure to a broad range of technical ideas, is to develop a critical view of the scientific process and literature of software engineering research. Each semester, the seminar group will identify a set of technical themes on which to focus in its review of outside literature. Each participant in the SSSG will make at least three half-hour presentations in a year, one on research in progress, one a critical summary and review of one or more published papers, and one at the discretion of the student. (This requirement is reduced to two for students who present in other recognized forums -- ask the instructor.) Students will be evaluated on the basis of the technical quality, organization, and presentation of their material, including interaction with the seminar group. The Seminar is offered for graduate credit, is repeatable, and indeed is intended to be an ongoing activity. PhD students in software engineering are required to register for this seminar on an ongoing basis, and all other graduate students are encouraged to attend. Students taking the SSSG for credit are expected to make three presentations each year.
