Human Giant, the comedy trio best known for their show on MTV, came to CMU on Friday as part of AB Comedy's contribution to Carnival. The Main Stage tent on Midway was packed with people, with even more hanging out by the wayside, in order to see the show. After a very, very long line, everybody was treated to a pre-show performance by our very own improv group, No Parking Players. What little snippets I could hear through the heavy chatter going on in the tent, I had to say was pretty good, and notwithstanding some hecklings, people seemed to enjoy our home-grown entertainment.
Human Giant got a big round of applause when they finally showed up on stage. Unfortunately, the group was down by one man, as while Aziz Ansari and Rob Huebel were in attendance, Paul Scheer was stuck at an airport, citing mechanical failures. The other two were quick to hypothesize some other reasons why he wasn't there, to hilarious effect.
With a lot of frantic energy and good nature, the two went through skit after skit, and overall I enjoyed the show. They stole a few shirts off the backs of some audience members, faked a live birth by one of the students, and had a good time on stage. They even made a joke about Buggy, which was an instant crowd pleaser.
A real let down about the show, though, which I'm sure irked more than a few people, was the heavy reliance on playing clips from their show on somebody's MacBook, straight off of their show's DVD. My guess is that since they were sans Paul Scheer, they needed to make up for the number of skits that needed three people, and used the video instead.
All can be forgiven, however, since much of the live act was drop dead hilarious (Ansari's bit on Coldstone Creamery was gold), and in the end, Human Giant's Main Stage show can be chalked up as another great portion to Carnival weekend.
