The Buggy Design competition was held in Wiegand Gym today, from 10 AM to 12 PM. Numerous student organizations and fraternities went head to head to proclaim themselves "best designed buggy," to vie for both people's choice and faculty-judged awards.
General trends I noticed were that fraternities didn't really bother with any paint jobs – for the most part, all of them were painted with a simple black coat. Student organizations on the other hand, come out with very beautiful design work every year, with this Carnival no exception. For example, Spirit adorns their buggies with detailed airbrushed work, SDC chooses to have simple block colors for all of their buggies, and Fringe takes a very precise and clean look to their buggy, with metallic colors and ribbon-like lines.
Many buggy designers also got a treat as a buggy raced in 1948 was wheeled into Wiegand. Built during the days of Carnegie Tech, raced by the fraternity Delta Tau Delta, and represented with a large number 12 on its side, the buggy has 4 large wheels, an upright drivers seat and almost soapbox derby body construction. Accompanied by former alums who remember building and racing it with pride, the buggy also showed how similar Sweepstakes has been for students, then and now.
