SPOON Rocks Carnival
Apr 21, 2007 1:26 pm | by Vidur Singhal

On Friday, April 20, the Activities Board presented yet another Carnival concert. SPOON, along with Oakley Hall and Weird Paul put on a great show that had the huge crowd going wild.

The show began with Weird Paul, a lo-fi musician from Pittsburgh who warmed up the audience with his special breed of hilarious music. He played his hit numbers like "Wine Coolers," "I Got Drunk at Chuck E. Cheese," "Dreaded Glaucoma Test" and the six second song, "Pay for your Tacos Quickly and Securely."

This was followed by Oakley Hall, an American folk rock band based in Brooklyn, New York. The group's songs combine elements of rock, bluegrass, and old-time music, prominently featuring the male-female vocal harmonies of lead vocalists Patrick Sullivan and Rachel Cox. They refer to this as country rock. Oakley Hall had the crowd raving, not to mention impatient waiting for SPOON's performance.

After Oakley Hall played its hit tracks such as "Lazy Susan" and "If I was in El Dorado," SPOON made its big entry on to stage, causing the audience to cheer wildly before they even started playing. Spoon is an American indie rock band from Austin, Texas with a wide underground following. The band consists of Britt Daniel (vocals, guitar); Jim Eno (drums); Rob Pope (bass) and Eric Harvey (keyboard, guitar, percussion, backing vocals). Needless to say, once Spoon started playing songs from its latest album Gimme Fiction, the crowd went wild. More people joined as the night went on, and the slow start to the evening was soon forgotten. They also played songs from the forthcoming album GaGaGaGaGa. The new album's release date is stated to be July 10th, and includes track titles such as "Don't Make Me a Target," "Rhythm and Soul," and "Black Like Me."

SPOON T-Shirts and albums were available outside Doherty Hall.

Overall, the concert had good music and a good turnout. All three of the bands seemed to have as much fun as the audience did.

Make sure you check out the website for these bands: Weird Paul, Oakley Hall, and SPOON.
