Buggy Sweepstakes 2007 Day 2
Apr 21, 2007 6:34 pm | by Terry Shyu

Buggy Sweepstakes is one of the highlights of the Carnival, and this year is no different.  The sky was clear, and people were basking under the sun on Tech and Frew Streets to watch the races.   Buggy Sweepstakes 2007 Finals Heat started at 8 a.m. with the exhibitions of the buggies, followed by the re-rolls and the final rolls.

During Spirit’s re-roll, Shaka Zulu was not able to make it to the finish line because of a crash on Schenley Drive.   However, it was quickly repaired and finished the run during the Women’s Heat before KDR’s Perun made to the finish line.   PiKA A’s Wyvern and SigNu A’s Skua are both black buggies, the distance was stretched a little going down the hill, and Wyvern won.  SDC A’s Psychosis broke a piece of their wheel coming to the finish line, but still beat Fringe A’s Bantam by a few seconds.

For Men’s Heat, Spirit A’s Seraph won by just a little, with Svengali following closely behind at the finish line.  The race between KDR’s Perun and PiKA’s Knightfall was very close, but Perun won nevertheless. SDC’s Addiction was winning from the start, but lost by a few seconds to PiKA’s Wyvern.  PiKA actually improved their time by 3 seconds compared to yesterday’s.

In between Men’s and Women’s heats, the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) made an appearance on the buggy track with their racing cars.  Powered by engines, these cars were about 10 seconds faster than the fastest Men’s team.

The incident of the wheel break right on the finish line during Women’s A for SDC did not cause them to be disqualified, since it did not affect the drop test.  SDC finishes within 2 seconds with the women’s record.

This year, PiKA runs with Zeus and wins the sixth year in a row.  AEPi, though did not make it to the top ten, dropped 25 seconds total.

The standings are as follows:

Women’s

1.      Psychosis/SDC, 2:31.00

2.   Wyvern/PiKA, 2:35.44

3.      Bantam/Fringe, 2:42.40

5.      King of Spades/SigNu, 2:15.75

"In between Men's and Women's heats, the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) made an appearance on the buggy track with their racing cars. The Toyota trucks said they were going ~75 mph down by the statue. This would be a seriously fast mens time if the cars were only 10 seconds faster. The TC pulse should get it's facts straight before publishing.

HELP! I would like to communicate with a person, or group involved with the buggy races. I participate in the Ultimate Division of the gravity races which are run in connection with the Soapbox Derby. I am searching for chemicals used to treat the rubber on the wheels.
