Although you wouldn’t believe it from the weather, it’s time for Spring Carnival 2007. Last Friday, April 13, Carnegie Mellon fraternities, sororities, and independent student organizations weathered the frigid conditions to move their partially built booths over to Midway on the Morewood Parking Lot. As usual, Forbes Avenue and Morewood Avenue were closed down to allow students to carry their booths across the street. The move went off without a hitch, but the rain and nasty weather this week has already caused problems.
At approximately 3 p.m. on Monday, a tarp covering a booth was picked up by the heavy winds, broke free of its moorings, and hit another booth. The booth collapsed under the strain of the tarp in the high winds, injuring one person, who was promptly taken to the hospital as a security measure. According to a misc.market post by Carnival Chair and Master’s student Jim Kerchenfaut, “the victim had some bruising but was not seriously injured.” After speaking with Mudge residents and Midway chair and CIT senior Travis Brier, it was determined that it was the Mudge blitz booth that collapsed and that the injured party is doing fine. Midway was closed until a safety inspector from Carnegie Mellon had inspected all of the booths, and has been open since the winds passed. We can only hope there are no further accidents in the days leading up to Midway’s opening at 3 p.m. on Thursday. It is expected to rain through Thursday, but we should expect a sunny weekend for an exciting Spring Carnival 2007!
