Academic Affairs received a comprehensive report on academic advising and are following up on it. The report itself will be available online soon.
Business Affairs met with Carnegie Mellon staff member Marcia Gerwig to discuss small computer kiosks in the University Center. While there may be possible locations for two to four computers, Student Senate would have to furnish funds for the project itself. The problem with that is that Student Senate's reserves are exhausted from this summer's University Center Allocation Board (UCAB) renovation of UC 318. On top of that, if computers were installed, they would have to be replaced every three years to comply with campus computing practices. Campus Life is pleased to announce their Homecoming Campus Gear Sale in the Wean Commons on Friday, October 13 from 12 - 5 p.m. (the date is changed from October 14). Student senators will be selling hooded sweatshirts, gym shorts, t-shirts, and other articles of clothing with official Carnegie Mellon designs for half of their original prices or less. Campus Life would also like to investigate the possibility of installing benches in the UC Turnaround.
Communications is gathering contact information for campus leaders in an effort to open up more feedback channels, especially from students to senators so that Student Senate can get a clear mandate on issues and a more student body-based agenda.
Finance brought a motion from SUMMIT to the general body. The committee lowered the original request from $3,000 to $1,500 because they want to fund SUMMIT in its entirety via the Joint Funding Committee, and not with special allocations funds that should ideally go to events that are not annual. The Finance Committee also continues to extend an invitation to campus organization leaders to join the Joint Funding process (e-mail Joel Bergstein for more information).
At the General Body Meeting, Senate filled its last TSB vacancy and welcomes Megan Larcom to Student Senate. After brief discussion about the SUMMIT motion, the body passed it 17-1-2 (aye-nay-abstain). Specific information regarding the allocation is included below. The body also introduced a session rule that combines the Communications and Internal Development committees into one committee: Development and Communication. The two had been joined before in the past, and Senate would like to experiment with joining them for a semester. The motion passed 21-0-1. The body then elected MCS junior Kelly Duncan as the second Dining Advisory Council (DAC) representative from Student Senate.
Upcoming Meetings:
General Body: Thursday 5:00 p.m., DH 2210
Executive Committee: Wednesday 7:00 p.m., UC 318G
$1500 to Student Development for SUMMITDate: January 11-13, 2007
Request: SUMMIT is a three-day experience occurring before the second semester begins during winter break. Students are provided the opportunity to take extracurricular classes just for fun. Classes range from furniture-making to glassblowing to wilderness survival, and the event is open to all students with a registration fee of $45 per person and a maximum registration of 300 people.
Committee Decision: Students who attend SUMMIT pay three times: once for registration fees, once in the form of JFC funding, and once in the form of this special allocation. Finance would like for student government to fund SUMMIT solely through their JFC allocation. Therefore, Finance arrived at the $1,500 (opposed to the $3,000 original request) as a supplement for SUMMIT's JFC funding. This will also serve as a suggestion for this year's JFC as to the total subsidy that SUMMIT should receive. With a $1500 allocation, student government support for SUMMIT will be a total of $4,300 for this year.
