On Friday, September 22, the Carnegie Clan held a "gun show" in the University Center's Kirr Commons. The 35 participants of the Guns of Carnegie event arm-wrestled each other to earn the pride of victory and some handmade t-shirts with spray painted muscles on them. The event began with a series of exhibition matches just to get people pumped up, and then transitioned into tournament competition among varying weight classes. There were light-weight, medium-weight, and heavy-weight divisions for each gender, and there were quite a number of girls competing against each other as well in their separate division.
Many students came, won, and went, but one stayed on as a true champion. The witty announcer, HSS first-year Sarah Suhan, called out to the people eating in the UC and got together a small crowd to watch an undefeated heavy-weight, CIT first-year James Hulley, literally shake the table on which the arm-wrestling took place. James "Goliath" Hulley held on strong while people cheered and finally beat his last challenger for that day.
"I'm glad I've won, but my shoulder really hurts," said a red-faced Hulley. "I think I might have pulled something."
Another crowd-drawing pair was Carnegie Mellon's own Officer Amy and Officer David, who to no surprise won both of their heats, both left-handed and right.
Overall, the Carnegie Clan achieved its goal to raise spirit in Carnegie Mellon.
Another upcoming Carnegie Clan event is the Homecoming Chili Cookoff on Saturday, October 14 at 3 p.m. For more information about Carnegie Clan and the Cookoff, visit www.gotartans.com.
