In just a little over 100 years, the local technical school for the sons of steelworkers has blossomed into an internationally renowned top-tiered research university. Selected as a "New Ivy" and one of the best global schools in leading college ranking publications, Carnegie Mellon is reaching new heights in 2006. Kaplan/Newsweek's "How to Get into College" named Carnegie Mellon as one of the 25 "New Ivies." New Ivies are top-rated universities that are providing competition for the traditional Ivy League academic powerhouses such as Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. Carnegie Mellon was selected based on interviews with administrators, students, and faculty, and admission statistics. Kaplan/Newsweek also ranked Carnegie Mellon at 75 among "The Top 100 Global Universities," proving its international prestige in additional to national.
Carnegie Mellon ranked 21 overall in the US News & World Report's "America's Best Colleges," surpassing Georgetown University and equaling with University of California at Berkeley. CMU's engineering and business programs both ranked eighth.
Several other specialized programs received recognition in various publications, including our architecture and industrial design programs. They were ranked ninth and sixth in their respective categories in DesignIntelligence's 2006 rankings. In the Leiter Report's "The Philosophical Gourmet," Carnegie Mellon ranked in the top 5 for several categories including mathematical logic, philosophy and social science, decision theory, rational choice, and philosophy and science.
In addition to its stellar academics, Carnegie Mellon excels as a LGBTQ (lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgendered/queer) friendly school. The Advocate College Guide for LGBT Students included Carnegie Mellon as one of the top 100 LGBT friendly schools. The self-proclaimed "best roadmap to queer college students" chose Carnegie Mellon and the other schools based on policies, institutional commitment and support, academic life, housing, student life, counseling and health efforts, campus safety, and recruitment and retention efforts. This book is the first comprehensive college guide for LGBT students, and was meticulously put together through 5,500 online interviews and sifting through 690 nominations.
Carnegie Mellon is on an upward path, continuing to gain more proclaim each year. Our admissions statistics reflects our increased prestige and popularity. This year, CMU entered its largest freshman class and an increased yield rate.
