The Friday evening of Orientation week, first-years were guided by the Orientation staff to the Cut for a great competition. Although it had shed its traditional name of “House Wars,” this year’s Carnegie Games still provided an evening of entertainment and rivalry for the incoming freshman class. Unlike in recent years, the teams of approximately 20 students competed for their overall color group and not for their individual dormitories. These teams dueled in 10 different games, such as the Dizzy Bat Relay and the Sponge Pass. Color groupings were divided between dormitories along conventional Orientation lines: Blue for Donner House, the Intersection dorms, West Wing/Resnik, and commuter students; Green for New House; Red for the Hill dorms; Pink for Mudge House and the Oakland apartments; and Purple for Morewood Gardens. Temporary housing students reside in Donner and Morewood this year, and thus were included on those teams.
Although every color group displayed unwavering loyalty and cheering for their color, at the end of the evening, one color group rose above the rest in the final scores. Although Green (163 points), Pink (165), Purple (175), and Blue (182) only edged each other out within a margin of 20 points, the Red Group amounted a whopping 241 points and were crowned the winners of the 2006 Carnegie Games. The illustrious Carnegie Cup trophy will be shared among the Hill dormitories for the remainder of the academic year.
