We all remember our first week at Carnegie Mellon: the awkward introductions, aimlessly wandering around the wrong side of campus looking for the University Center, forgetting keys in the dorm room. But there was one place where you could meet tons of people. Think back... A swarm of 1,000 people, roaring like tigers and running around the football field.
Upperclassmen watching from the sidelines, yelling and heckling the crowd. (And why were they drinking out of a thermoses?)
Oh, how could you forget, it's Playfair! This year's freshman class experienced our school's Orientation tradition in Gesling Stadium, where screaming Orientation Counselors (OCs) and Resident Assistants (RAs) were there to get everybody pumped.

Walking out to Playfair with over 1,000 screaming freshmen, OCs, and RAs can seem intimidating. | First-years throw their hands in the air searching for others with their same birth month. |
After some help from the MC, the Class of 2009 on Gesling's field finds his or her birth month group during Playfair. | New acquaintances quickly become old friends at Playfair. |
After the touch-barrier-breaking "sit down" icebreaker, Class of 2009 Playfair participants relax on the astroturf. | Freshmen shuffle into smaller groups. |
Back-to-back, the first-years make a few new friends. | With their "core groups," freshmen, OCs, and RAs chat after a name-game exercise during Playfair. |
After Playfair reaches its conclusion, some stick around for frisbee on the football field. | |
