New House will receive the Pennsylvania Governor's Award for Environmental Excellence from the Secretary of Environmental Protection, Kathleen McGinty this Friday at 1 p.m. in the New House Common Area. University Provost Mark Kamlet will be presenting the award.
New House was declared a winner of the award based on criteria established by the state's Department of Environmental Protection. New House achieves environmental education and outreach by educating its residents and the campus community and uses innovative technology through aspects of the building such as its all-recycled carpets and walls. Other criteria for the award include teamwork, public service, and economic impact.
New House is the first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certifieduniversity dormitory in the nation. New House is one of two LEED Silver dorms on campus; Henderson House is the other.
Previous recipients are other educational institutions, such as EasternUniversity and WilsonCollege and large corporations, such as United Parcel Service (UPS), Pfizer Inc. and Caterpillar, Inc.
A reception will follow the presentation of the award. All members of the Carnegie Mellon campus community are welcome to attend, which will be held in New House.
