Students can get 12 free therapy sessions
Nov 22, 2004 3:34 am | by Lindsey Quinn Arroyo

Did you know that Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) offers Carnegie Mellon students up to 12 free therapy sessions a year? Meetings are individual, confidential, and designed to help students with a range of issues including — but not limited to — school-related stress, depression, sexual abuse, body image disorders, time management, and drug and alcohol dependence. Students must make an appointment for an initial assessment of their psychological histories, present concerns, and goals. Following this initial meeting, therapists will help clients determine their individualized treatment plans. According to the CAPS website, "the nature of the therapy will depend on a variety of factors based on individual preference, but all therapy affords an opportunity to explore issues of concern in a safe, confidential setting on a one-on-one basis with a trained professional."

After completing 12 sessions, or upon graduating Carnegie Mellon, students may decide to pursue further therapy.  In these cases, the CAPS staff will help their clients find other locations for therapy that will best fit students' individual needs and insurance plans. Group psychotherapy, crisis intervention, and after-hours emergency assistance are also available.

CAPS is located in Morewood Gardens E-Tower, room 230. You can make an appointment by calling 412.268.2922, or by stopping in anytime from 8:30 am-8 pm on Monday or Tuesday, or from 8:30 am-5 pm from Wednesday to Friday.
