The United Way and the Salvation Army have come to the Carnegie Mellon community to help raise the spirits of flood victims of AlleghenyCounty and Children during the holiday season by collecting funds and supplies to tide them over during this time. Students and faculty are encouraged to help out with this effort, which will benefit 71 local agencies, including the Red Cross, that provide shelter, food, and health benefits to people in emergency recovery situations. 100 percent of donations [go directly to those in need].

The United Way has a long history at Carnegie Mellon of helping out the Pittsburgh community. Most recently, they have created an impact fund for the victims of the September 17 flood that devastated many of the local residents in AlleghenyCounty.

Donations are currently at 10 percent of their goal. The campaign's progress can be monitored on the large billboard in front of Entropy. Donations can be made until November 22 online at  https://www.unitedwaypittsburgh.org/uwac/carnegiemellon.

Academic Development is also encouraging students and faculty to buy holiday gifts for children through the Salvation Army. Students can stop by room 212 in the OldStudentCenter and pick up a Christmas stocking from the Angel tree, each of which contains a child's wishlist for the holiday season. Gift donations will be accepted through December 2.
